Love this place - in the summer on their patio listening to top rated bands is the place to be!

I was referred to this restaurant by our hotel Banquet Manager. He said that it was about 20 miles from our hotel. Now he did not have to refer us to a hotel that far away but he did. He knew we wanted to eat near Lake Michigan because our group had never seen the Lake. So off we went to Port Washington, the cutest little town. It reminded me of a city I spent my summers in. Anyways, back to the restaurant. It sits on the Lake Michigan Marina and is located so that you can see out to the marina and its beautiful lights and boat slips. The place is casual, the food is not pretentious. This place is just plain yummy seafood comfort food. As in my prior reviews I have to confess my distaste for seafood. One of my co-workers wanted a sea food restaurant since we were going to be on the lake. Several of my coworkers ordered the Bengali Shrimp. The shrimp were huge, bigger than Tiger Shrimp. They all raved about them. I had the French Onion soup which was absolutely freaking delicious. Then I had the pork medallions with Spatzle, but when my food arrived, they were not pork medallions. They were some sort of pork that shredded like a pot roast. They were delicious so I decided I didn't need to split hairs. The Spatzle was all buttery goodness. Our waitress was absolutely phenomenal and I had nothing to complain about. There were 7 of us and we all agreed that we loved this place.

Service was good and if you could sit outside it would have been nice. This was incredibly noisy and crowded inside . Terrible acoustics and tables shoved togethet and we could not see the view as bar was on the way! The perch sandwich was tasty Snd French fries were good. We had excellent service but I had Bengali shrimp that had no flavor and I only received 4 and gave one away as so bland . Cheese curds were fried too hard. Seafood chowder also lacked flavor tasted like chunky glue. My friend raved about his prime rib snd they did have horseradish. If you want to eat healthy ... Pick another restaurant! If you want to have conversation pick another restaurant . If you ate a 70 year old geezer sit at the bar and enjoy the drinks probably a good place for you

My brother and I were in town with a couple of friends to go fishing with Nicky Boy Charters, and this restaurant was recommended by Captain Chris. Nice variety of comfort food, seafood and steaks. Service was good and it was nice being able to eat on the patio. The Schaum Torte is a must! Reminded my brother and I of mom's Schaum torte growing up.

C- Service was nice although rather clueless and food was subpar. Prime rib was well done when I asked for medium rare and was told that's all they had. Rice was very dry and crunchy. App fried pickles were fun.

Good portions, very tasty fish and seafood, good service. Very loud ambiance and hard to carry on a conversation! Jeff the bartender is very good and remembers everyone's name and drink!

Whitefish was excellent! Friendly staff - people having a blast out on the patio enjoying live music. Great views on a beautiful day!

I have dined in my share of restaurants from coast to coast and while I have seen a few better, this is among the best working class seafood establishments I have seen. The staff was prompt and friendly possessing good humor and cheer. The décor is a bit dated, but comfortable. The dining area could use a bit more space between tables. wall to wall windows on the east side of the dining area give a great view of the marina, the parking lot and the lake. Our lunch was appetizing and flavorful. China by Homer Laughlin (made in USA), but flatware is Cisco stamped steel of lighter stock than we make our automobiles of. Give me a little more elbow room, better flatware, and a cloth napkin and I would consider adding a fifth star to my rating.

I really don't understand the bad reviews for this place. My wife and I were treated very well and the food was really good. We didn't wait long at all, the waitress was friendly and the food came out quickly. It's not a large restaurant and yes, the bar pretty much fills the place so it can get kinda loud. If you're looking for a dining "experience" forget it but if you want a good meal at a reasonable price in what I'd describe as a friendly local place don't hesitate to try it out.

Some may say this restaurant needs help. It's a little dated, but the food is really good. I was visiting PW last weekend and ate here twice. Lobster both nights. Also the crab cakes and fried cheese curd appetizers were very tasty!.. Also, if you like Chocolate Martini's try one here!!

I did not like this at all. No flavor, nothing to get excited over. It has a nice view, big menu, but i was not impressed. The waitress seemed irritated and was not friendly. If you have lost your taste buds and like a great view of Lake Michigan then I reccomend this place, otherwise try a different place.

Great view....great location....but that's it. Service was only "so so." The food was not that good. The White Fish was tasteless, very bland. Two of the party of six had the fish....very blah. One person had the scallops, and was happy with the selection, but the side dish of rice was not cooked. One person had a steak sandwich and another had a salad with the wrong kind of dressing? Blue cheese dressing was a dollar extra??? It seems a lot of things were extra. I had the flank steak/shrimp combo. It was "okay." Two major problems: a cosmopolitan drink looked like a cosmopolitan, but didn't taste anywhere close to a Cosmo (four people tried it and we had to send it back for a credit, not willing to trust the bartender for a replacement). When the bills arrived, they had two of the three checks on the wrong credit card. I would not recommend this restaurant for those that want a good meal. If you just want to sit a a great bar with a beer with a view of the lake and boats....this is it. It's hard to mess up a good beer.

Very disappointing! We were here a few years ago, had a wonderful time. Tried to order food many, many times. Place mats set in front of us but no waitress came to take our order. Waited 40 minutes and finally left. Apparently they only cater to locales.

  • Drew S.

Poor service. Listened to specials as another server have them to the table next to us. Our bad food was already in front of us. I would highly recommend skipping this place. My three kids, wife and I found nothing worth stopping in. Completely not memorable.

The French onion soup deserves 5 stars but the rest is pretty much pedestrian. I got the Friday fish fry and it was no better than anything I could fry up at home. The cole slaw didn't have enough dressing and the rye bread was dried out. The french fries were straight out of the frozen foods aisle. The restaurant itself is stuck in another era- and not in a quirky/vintage way. They also apparently don't have air conditioning. I would suggest going somewhere else.

  • Chris C.

Wow, for a restaurant right on the shore of Lake Michigan, clearly nothing is fresh. All the fish is frozen and over cooked. Such a great location, such terrible food. If this restaurant could just use local, fresh fish, it would be great. Except for the huge bar that takes up about 80% of the dining area. Bizarre.

  • Danielle I.

General experience can be summed up pretty simply. Grumby service borderline hostile felt really like we shoulda just paid her for inconvenience the waitress to take our order. The food was only ok I have had better and surprising not many "fish" choices for being a fish restaurant and its all in oil no blackened, no baked, nothing. I dont know between the mediocre food and the service i'd be perfectly happy not coming back honestly wont remember this place a month from now most likely.

Made reservations for 6:30 on a Friday night. We had a party of 7. The place was very busy. We had several drinks while waiting and they were good. Not watered down at all. The appetizers and food came pretty quick. We came for the perch fry and that's what we all got. It was excellent! One of the best perch fry's I have had. I would recommend that you get a reservation or prepare to wait. They are busy and rightfully so.

I came here after funeral services with a party of 25. We had made reservations for the back room. Everything was ready for us. Service was quick and very friendly. I had the ribeye which was cooked to perfection. across the spectrum of food that everyone else had ordered I had recieved nothing but the best reviews. The only negative I have is the view from the back room, being the back room however I can not deduct for that. The view in the main area is splendid. This place is highly recommended.

TURN AROUND AND WALK OUT! Ok seriously, I hope you are now reading this in your car. We stopped in for some lunch the other day around 11:55 and was informed they were only serving brunch. "brunch" consisted of a mobile cart with heat lamps that contained disgusting lumps of salad that looked about a week old, what looked like ribs?, random things like corn, deep fried shrimp, and pasta salad that looked pretty iffy. Oh and crusty French toast sticks that looked the same as what I can buy at Costco. I noticed the table that got there 1 minute after we did had menus. I asked our server if we could have menus also and she said "Well it wasn't 12:00 when you got here" in a very nasty tone to which I informed her it still wasn't noon. 11:58 in fact. She then said "Well I guess I have to get you menu's then!" sharply. When she came back my husband said sorry if there was any issue and her response was looking at him then walking away and not saying anything. She was very friendly with all the locals, but anyone new she didn't give the time of day to. Same with the other server that had the table next to us. They asked if they could substitute something in the salad and was sharply informed "No substitutions" really? You're a restaurant and don't offer any changes? Anyway, I had the stuffed shrimp which didn't have any flavor and my husband the fish sandwich. For the price and being on the lake you would think it wouldn't taste frozen and look like it was pulled out from a backyard pond. The bartender is just as rude making jokes about us to our server because we didn't want the brunch. Maybe they thought we were hard of hearing? Regardless, stay away from here. The service is poor and the food is worse.

Ohhhh kay. My dining companion and I arrived here at 6:00 p.m. last night (Sunday). After hanging out on their admittedly adorable and fun patio for 20 minutes, a sympathetic bus-girl brought us water and food menus and said there was only one wait staff for the whole patio, but she would send her our way. There were seven other occupied tables on the patio. I observed the waitress pause and glare at us twice, obviously checking us out, and then go into the building. I also observed two other parties that arrived well after us get service right away. The bus-girl checked on us again, saying she had told the waitress to come to us, but seemed a little surprised that she hadn't. A couple of other waitresses from inside came in and did who knows what business with other tables, but never us. We left at 6:40 p.m. pretty upset. This is heartbreaking to me and my biking friends. We love to bike the Ozaukee Interurban trail from Milwaukee to Port Washington, and have this place be the end-point/mid ride break place. Its location is smashing, and we've enjoyed drinks or dinner here before heading back. The service has always been slow, and I've been given the shpiel before about there only being one waitstaff assigned for the large patio, but this experience felt downright insulting. A fellow reviewer said they were treated like lepers-yes! That was the feeling exactly. And it cost us precious time on the bike ride, causing us to have to ride back to Milwaukee in the dark. We drowned our sorrows in margaritas at Beanie's, a nearby Mexican Restaurant, which was a nice respite to the disaster that apparently is currently Newport Shores. I'll never go back there unless they go under new management.

So, a group of 6 of us ate here on Saturday night. We had just disembarked our sailboat and were staying at the marina overnight, so naturally we headed into town for dinner. When we arrived, the place was hopping, and our wait for a table was an hour and a half. (Understandable) so, we bellied up to the weird bar which takes up half the space in the main room, and decided to eat there. Usually, places like this are really good. 2 middle aged bartenders who have definitely poured a manhattan or 2, cheesy old school furnishings, live music, great view, packed house- I was especially excited to see an $18 petite filet on the menu. I live in Chicago, so any time I can pay non-Chicago filet prices, I jump on it. Let me tell you- it was the worst filet I've ever had. In fact, I didn't finish it, and I'd been on a boat all day eating nothing but finger foods and drinking beer. I was hungry. Normally, a petite filet is almost TOO small for me- I love steak. But this- I should have sent it back. It was overcooked and chewy. Thank goodness it came with some fairly decent french onion soup and a potato. Finally, they had a prime rib special happening that night. My friend ordered one- it wasn't the greatest I've tasted, but man- it was much, much better than my filet. Bummer. Do yourself a favor- skip this spot. As far as I can tell, it's main draw is the patio/live music and the old school atmosphere.

Stopped in for the third time last night & ordered the catfish , I enjoyed it . Reading some of the reviews on here cracks me up . Everyone is in such a hurry these days , slow down & relax people it's not all about you .If you are in a hurry stop at McDonalds . Anyways my girlfriend had the stuffed shrimp & she was happy with her meal . Staff was cool , yes the bartenders talk too much & it does get a lil noisy , big deal . We will be back .

It makes me so sad to see so many terrible reviews on here about this place. My fiancee and I eat here regularly and always have a very pleasant experience. We normally go here to treat ourselves to a nice dinner. He always gets steak and lobster. I always get steak and shrimp. This is one of the only places we go to that cook the steak a proper medium. The steaks are always awesome - seasoned well and very tender. The shrimp are giant, and when I'm lucky I get a bite of his lobster and it's always so yummy. A few weeks ago, we brought friends here for a Sunday brunch. We passed on the brunch buffet, and all ordered sandwiches which were all great! Plus, talk about cheap drink prices - giant delicious bloody mary's for under $6! I was the odd man out ordering a mimosa. It was huge and only $5. I had stuff to get done later that day or I definitely would have ordered more! Our service is always great. On rare occasions we sit at the bar while waiting for a table, and every one is always so friendly. Our waitresses are always really nice and prompt. Now, the best part of this place besides the great food? The view of course. Cannot wait to come here again and sit out on the patio and enjoy the weather and the view of the lake.

Shrimp scampi is terrible! Dried rice and bland shrimp. Eat at Victor's restaurant instead. Victor's has the best food in Port Washington. Newport Shores is a waste of money.

Ok let me say this the only reason I am giving this a two stars is because of the bartender Buzz and the view other wise I would have given it one star. I was greeted very warmly by the bartender when I sat at the bar. It seemed like the music stopped and everyone looked at me when I sat down. The people can tell you are not from their town. The drink Buzz poured was perfect a Kettle one on the rocks with a splash of tonic. He did it perfectly not too much tonic but not to little. That is where the fun stopped. I ordered the sirloin and fried shrimp. When the plate arrived it looked like someone cut into the middle of the steak to see if it was done the poor thing looked like road kill. I have to say it was cooked right (medium rare). The shrimp were fishy and the batter was soft. The must have finished the shrimp first and tried to keep them warm under a heat lamp. The highlight of the meal was the French Frys perfectly crisp and hot. Maybe they should have cooked the shrimp with the fries. This place does have a nice selection of tap beers and Buzz picked a perfect one for me. My recommendation is come for the drinks leave for food.

Popular spot right at the water for lunch and dinner. A table at the window overlooking the lake is ideal. We stopped here twice. Once for just drinks (Bloody Mary's were GREAT!) and the other time for dinner. Dinner (steak and seafood) were decent enough. Not the best or the worse I ever had, but ok. The restaurant gets crowded, it's popular. I would definitely go back for drinks and apps, but maybe not for dinner again.

Autumn leaves have started to fall and with that said my friend John, the certified Italian Chef suggested it has been a long time since we were last (May) at Newport Shores. With that said, we headed the 22 miles to scenic Port Washington from northern Milwaukee. Driving up the country roads, we were treated to an array of changing colors well worth the drive alone. Arriving in town, it looks like several more businesses had sadly disappeared. We arrived at Newport Shores at 12:20 p.m. on Thursday to a full parking lot, just finding three spaces still available. Would we have a wait? Luckily entering the restaurant it appeared everyone came in their own cars. I ordered my usual Hamburger Steak (see original review) and John ordered his broiled Walleye Pike. My steak met my high standards as one of the best. I could actually hear my stomach yelping "thank you, thank you!" However, while John's salad was fine and the baked potato was huge, the portion of Walleye Pike (still $12.95) was perhaps half of what he had enjoyed each of the last three times we had been there this year. It actually looked too small a portion to send out the kitchen for that price. I hope management is reading this!!! While Jen did a worthy effort serving us, it was not enough to keep my rating at Four Stars. Yes, the Pike was excellent, but John is not a child!

Well, we threw the dice on this one, the range of ratings would usually mean a restaurant we would not normally try. I wished now we had not! The location is excellent with a lovely view of the harbor and the lake - that's about it. The decor is dated "unchanged from the 70's". We tried the Sunday AM brunch with a "fresh" omlette. Very average quality food, very. Then again it wasn't expensive so I guess you get what you pay for ........ Food was overcooked, greasy/oily, my title says it all ....

You can't eat the view...better to pack a meal and eat by the marina. Or, just have a cocktail and enjoy the view. This place would make a great venue for Chef Ramsey's "Kitchen Nightmares." Food: Poor to mediocre at best Service: Poor to mediocre Atmosphere: Mediocre at best View: Lovely If you enjoy view of Lake Michigan along with worn, plastic water glasses, sticky, vinyl tablecloths, sticky, metal and vinyl chairs, service staff who don't introduce themselves, don't check-in on how you are enjoying your meal, high noise level because of the bar traffic...then this is the place for you! If you are a health department inspector, check this place out. It's rather dirty. (I hope that my husband or I don't get food poisoning.) I must admit that arrived to the restaurant without an appetite. Our waitstaff didn't suggest anything when I admitted that I wasn't very hungry. The waitstaff (name unknown because she didn't have the courtesy to introduce herself) didn't provide any suggestions. She "rattled off" the specials and left. My husband ordered the seafood soup, whitefish special (whitefish stuffed with a bread-seafood stuffing and smothered in hollandaise sauce) and a "naked" baked potato. I settled on the spinach salad with "hot bacon dressing" for my meal. My salad arrived, the waitstaff placed it in front of me after she served my husband his soup. (I wanted it served as my meal--disappointment.) The salad consisted of bagged spinach leaves with the stems still on, 2 cherry tomatoes, 2 egg slices, a heap of red onion smothered in the hot bacon dressing that was a thick consistency. (Frankly, it looked like vomit--no joke.) I scooped off the top layer with the bulk of the dressing and placed it on my bread plate. I ate only the 2 egg slices and about 6 spinach leaves. I placed the salad aside, disinterested in eating it. (The waitstaff never asked how it was tasting, took the bread plate with the majority of the dressing and wilted spinach leaves away. When I did complain that it was too heavily dressed, she did offer to bring me plain spinach leaves. I declined.) Insult to injury--she charged me for the salad that I didn't eat. I won't recommend this place and I won't return.

*Sigh* I hadn't gone to Newport Shores for quite a few years and my childhood memories were getting the best of me, so I decided to meet up with some family members on a Sunday for brunch. Here's the breakdown of my visit ... Location: It's great. It's on the lake with plenty of parking around the area. We were entertained by a surfer (hard to believe) attempting to catch a wave ... Atmosphere: There's something to be desired here but I wouldn't say that the décor would make me turn away. The staff was quite attentive and friendly. Food: Meh. Bleh. I don't know how else to describe it. Maybe it was my fault for getting the brunch, which was pre-ordered for me, but the food was actually pretty awful. I kept an open mind and was hoping that each piece of food on my plate would taste better than the next, but that didn't happen. The corn-on-the-cob was so soggy from sitting in a bowl of water all day that it lost all of its flavor. The fish was so bad that I could only eat two bites of it -so greasy and watery that the texture alone lost me with the first bite. The veggies were old and turning brown. And the scrambled eggs were the saddest eggs I think I've ever seen in my life. I wanted to like this place (mostly for the nostalgic value), but the food was just too horrible.

It's got a 5 star location, and yes I think a good cook on staff, but think owner is just hanging on, kind of given up? with plans to build a tower condo project shot in the foot by powers to be the city of Port, a condo tower next door half empty now renting units the money signs are not looking good for the kid! now for the short time, time has stopped, the bar retro 70's, the brunch well bar grub, Friday fish fry ok but just 2 stars! bar its ok as bartender a local fixture will help you place your super bowl bets as long as the fed's aint in town! It could be great! tear the bar out, up date the place and serve some great food forget the property thing as its not going to work now and get back into food!

A friend and I stopped in for something and sat down at a table. This is at the halfway mark of our Milw to Port Washington bike ride. A waitress was busy clearing tables and we tried repeatedly to get her attention for a menu and to order. When we went up to her to ask for a menu she walked away. It was if we were lepers and they didn't want to serve us. After 20 minutes we left. Great location, but if they refuse to wait on customers how do they stay in business.

    (1)
  • Rosemary K.

Huge mistake when deciding where to eat in Port Washington. It was a Tuesday night and service was non-exsistent. There were plenty of servers in the place and they were busy. That is no excuse for constantly telling us they would be right with us. Our wine glasses stood on the bar for about 5 minutes while the server waited other tables. Most of the options were fried or covered in a sauce...vegetables were overcooked and greasy. The salad was crisp...a highlight. This may be a favorite hot spot for locals and they need to know the food is mediocre at best. The location is on Lake Michigan and I cannot help but think if they could improve the food this would be a gem.

This place is way overrated! The atmosphere sucks--very dated. The food is OK. I just don't understand why people recommend it so much! It's an old man smoking a cigar wearing a white leisure suit kind of place.

2.5 stars. The good: location overlooking lake Michigan and the food. The bad: service and cleanliness. Old school place where dinner takes two hours. The food was good but they clear the tables to trays right near by and just leave then until full. Then start all over again. Shrimp cocktail was small. Just six small shrimp laying on a plate with ice cubes, lemon wedge and a small cup of cocktail sauce. The walleye special and scallop dish was good. I wouldn't eat here again just because it was too slow even though the restaurant wasn't packed with people on a Sunday night.

We drove out to Port Washington expecting there to be a number of good places for fish in this port town. Maybe I missed the place to go to because NewPort Shores wasn't it. We drove around a bit and couldn't find a place that even mentioned seafood in their name or on a sign. So we asked someone at a coffee shop and they recommended NewPort Shores. I was hopeful because it looked like a nice little port restaurant and also looked like a place from out of the 60s. It went downhill from there. Long wait for service, long wait for food, average food, lousy atmosphere and crappy view. On top of it our waitress called out our name and said "who's card is this?" immediately after I had given it to her to pay for our bill. Funny thing was some fellow said yeah, that's me, took the card, looked at it and then started to put it in his wallet! I was watching the whole thing go down in disbelief. I walked over and told her that that was our card! She got it back and I just gave a "you dumbs**t" look at the creep that tried to take it. She said, "oh! that's yours. I got confused." I have read that this place has a fantastic view. The view is of a parking lot! The lake is a good ways past that. The best view is out their north east corner where there is little room as they have a large bar that takes up most of this part of the restaurant. The prices were modest. Won't be going back here.

The atmosphere here is total crap. It's noisy, low ceiling, terrible ambiance...although it does match the service. Slow and lousy. I had the poor man's lobster. That man must have been REALLY poor.

Maybe 3 1/2 stars for the food, 1 star for the service. . Stopped by for lunch today. Was seated immediately(at noon on a Saturday), water and menus appeared right away. Wait staff appeared to take our drink orders and they appeared quite quickly. Then things began to go downhill. Took forever to take our order. Appetizer came out in less than 10 minutes. A couple of burgers took another 25 minutes. Asked for our check, and again it came in a reasonable period of time. However, the waitress never did come back to take our $$$$. By actual count it was 20 minutes of waiting before I got fed up and simple threw the $$$ on the table and left. In her defense, there were only 3 waitresses that I could ever see handling the dining room, people at the bar who were eating and an outdoor dining patio. Understaffed by at least one person, perhaps two. As we were leaving there were at least a dozen people waiting in line for a table. Food was fine but the service was really poor. I blame management, not the overworked wait staff.

Poor service. Listened to specials as another server have them to the table next to us. Our bad food was already in front of us. I would highly recommend skipping this place. My three kids, wife and I found nothing worth stopping in. Completely not memorable.

Bizarre.

This place is way overrated! The atmosphere sucks--very dated. The food is OK. I just don't understand why people recommend it so much! It's an old man smoking a cigar wearing a white leisure suit kind of place.
